The SW200-1 & NH Automatic Movements
The Beating Heart of Your Homemade Rhode Island Watch
Every watch from Homemade Rhode Island is powered by one of two exceptional movements: the Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1 and the Japanese-made Seiko NH35. I love both for their unique qualities, but if I'm being honest, the NH35 holds a special place in my heart for its no-frills reliability, ease of use, and fair price.
If you're curious about a side-by-side comparison, this excellent video from DIY Watch Club offers a great look at the two movements you might find in your watch.
The best part about both of these movements is that they are "workhorses." They're widely available and serviceable by almost any watchmaker. Yes, every machine on your wrist will eventually need care and maintenance—that's just part of being an owner. But with these movements, you can avoid the nonsense of authorized dealers and inflated repair prices.
While working with them, I've noticed a small quirk in the NH35's date feature. At times, the date may not sit perfectly level in the date window, requiring a quick manual adjustment if you find it bothersome. To me, these minor quirks are part of the unique character each watch offers.
Whether you choose a timepiece with an SW200-1 or an NH35, you can rest assured that its beating heart will tick for many years to come. Your watch is not a "throwaway" item.
